BARN SWALLOW

( Layang - layang Pekan) 15 -20 cm
DESCRIPTION
Larger Swallow with a black band between reddish upper breast and clean white, buff or pinkish underparts and tail ( with whitish spot) dark blue-black, the tail deeply forked with long streamers ( often missing during moult)
DISTRIBUTION
Resident almost throughout the N hemisphre, in Asia Southward to N Thailand and Vietnam: non breeding migrant to all the S continents and throughout out region
HABITS and HABITAT
Found almost everywhere, from lowland to mountains, over town, village, agriculture and forest. A few individuals are present in almost every month, but predominantly in Aug - Apr. Sometimes gathers in a huge flocks, especially when roosting on overheads wires in well-lit, busy small town. Number have declined over decades, but the species still considered common. Not hard to identify by its size, clean appearances and tail shape. Feeding birds may displace smaller House Swallows.
